International Conference on Soviet-Spanish Relations in 1936-1939

September 12th-14th an international conference on «Soviet-Spanish relations during Spanish Civil War 1936-1939» took place in Moscow. The event attracted participants from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Spanish Embassy in Russia, the Institute of World History at the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Cervantes Institute in Moscow and other organizations.

The Spanish civil war is a period during which the Soviet Union and Spain developed close relations, with the Soviet people expressing their support for the Republican cause.

September 12th and 13th, the conference was hosted by the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and on September 14th, the final section of the event was held at MGIMO. The Director of the Institute of International Studies Alexander Orlov moderated the discussions. The University’s Vice-Rector for Research Evgeny Kozhokin conveyed the Rector’s best wishes to the audience and underlined the interest sparked by the topic of the Spanish civil war. During the conference, Russian, Spanish and professors of other nationalities made presentations about the historical memory of the Spanish civil war.
