MGIMO Co-organizes Russia-ASEAN University Forum

September 5th-6th, the University Forum «Russia — ASEAN 2017: New Horizons for Cooperation» will unfold at the Far Eastern Federal University. The event was organized within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum by MGIMO and the Far Eastern Federal University, with the support of the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Education and Science.

The Forum will gather a myriad of prominent speakers and guests, from government structures, universities and business, including Olga Vasilieva, Minister of Education and Science, Yuri Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister, Anatoly Torkunov, MGIMO Rector, Nikita Anisimov, FEFU Rector and Igor Morgulov, Deputy Foreign Minister.

The Forum comprises a plenary session entitled «Russia — ASEAN 2017: New Horizons for Cooperation» devoted to how to develop inter-state relations based on common interests. The agenda also includes four thematic panels, during which will be discussed how the image of Russia in Southeast Asia and of ASEAN countries in Russia can be used as an effective soft power instrument to promote the Far East internationally. Participants will also think over the prospects for developing relations between Russia and the Philippines.

Anatoly Torkunov noted that last year’s Forum reflected the growing interest of all parties in developing relations with South-East Asia, and underlined MGIMO’s role in creating educational ties with universities based in ASEAN countries. Nikita Anisimov emphasized the fact that relations between Russia and ASEAN have reached a new level, and that alongside political and economic cooperation, educational and cultural ties have been increasing. The growing number of students from Southeast Asia enrolling with FEFU reflects the fact that ASEAN countries also have a heightened interest in Russia.
