May 14th, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov greeted the Foreign Minister of the Philippines, Alan Peter Cayetano. The guest gave a talk on the foreign policy of the Philippines and attended the signing of a cooperation agreement between MGIMO and the University of New Era.

In his welcome words, the Rector noted that it has become a tradition for the University to receive representatives of the Philippines; indeed in April, the inaugural meeting of the Russian and ASEAN research centers was attended by Filipino colleagues. Anatoly Torkunov also expressed the University’s readiness to participate in the implementation of the agreements on bilateral cooperation, which will be decided upon during upcoming talks between the Russian Foreign Minister and his Filipino counterpart.

Alan Peter Cayetano expressed enthusiasm at expanding cooperation between Russia and the Philippines in the long term and conveyed greetings from President Duterte. The meeting was followed by the signing of a cooperation agreement between MGIMO and the University of New Era.

The foreign minister also delivered a lecture to students and faculty members of the University. Alan Peter Cayetano spoke about the history of the Philippines, its impact on the country’s foreign policy and shared with the audience his country’s viewpoint on national sovereignty, fairness in international relations and a polycentric world order. The speaker encouraged the younger generation to not take what they hear for granted and to push aside the cold war mentality, which still impacts international relations.
