Meeting of ASEAN Centre Executive Board

August 31st, the 13th meeting of the Executive Board of MGIMO’s ASEAN Centre unfolded at the University. The event was attended by the Ambassador of the Philippines to the Russian Federation, also Co-Chair of the Board, Carlos Sorreta, the Ambassador of Lao People’s Democratic Republic in Russia Sivienghet Phetvorasak and the Ambassador of Myanmar to Russia Ko Ko-Shein.

The Russian side was represented by MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov, the Permanent Representative of Russia to ASEAN, Alexander Ivanov, the Co-Chair of the Board and MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for General Issues Artem Malgin, the Director of the ASEAN Centre Viktor Sumsky and faculty members.

Igor Morgulov gave a welcome speech and expressed his appreciation for the academic work performed by the ASEAN Centre at MGIMO. Anatoly Torkunov related to the guests the main events organized by the Centre in the year of ASEAN’s 50th anniversary, presenting the issues of Intertrends journal and «Knowledge is Strength» dedicated to this significant date.

Viktor Sumsky described the upcoming events organized by the Centre: the second Russia-ASEAN University Forum (September 5th-6th in Vladivostok), the conference «Russia and ASEAN in the Asia-Pacific Region», the essay competition dedicated to the 50th anniversary of ASEAN and the fifth Russia-ASEAN Youth Forum.

Ambassador Ivanov spoke of an ambitious project to create a network of Russian-ASEAN expertise centres, with MGIMO’s Centre coordinating the Russian side. Artem Malgin also suggested that MGIMO host lectures by leading professors and experts from ASEAN countries on a regular basis. All the meeting attendees remarked on the quality of the work performed by the ASEAN Centre and promised to support it in the future.
