MGIMO Mourns Ambassador Andrey Karlov

December 19th, Ambassador Andrei Karlov, an MGIMO graduate of the School of International Economic Relations (1976) was assassinated in Ankara.

The terrorist attack occurred during the opening of the art exhibit «Russia through Turks eyes» in the Contemporary Arts Center of the Turkish capital.

MGIMO’s leadership and Faculty convey their deepest condolences to Andrei Karlov’s family, friends, colleagues and to the personnel of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Born in 1954 in Moscow, Andrey Karlov graduated from MGIMO in 1976 and from the Diplomatic Academy in 1992. He had been a career diplomat since 1976, occupying various positions in the Central Office of the Foreign Ministry of the USSR as well as on postings abroad: from 1976 to 1981 and from 1984 to 1990 at the Embassy of the USSR in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and from 1992 to 1997 at the Russian Embassy in the Republic of Korea.

In 2001, Andrey Karlov was appointed Russia’s Ambassador to North Korea. Between 2007 and 2013 he served as Deputy Director, then Director of the Consular Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry. He took up his duties as Russia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey in July 2013.
