Alumni and Donors

MGIMO alumni have become national business, diplomatic and legal leaders in many countries, with several becoming Foreign Ministers, heads of government, and even Presidents.

MGIMO Alumni Association

The Alumni Association of MGIMO was founded in 1991 to support and strengthen friendly ties between its graduates, help them to keep in contact with the University, maintain the best traditions forged since its foundation and high level of knowledge it provides. Today, the Association comprises several thousand graduates of several generations including diplomats and public officials, politicians, and civil activists, professionals of various cultural and sport institutions, businessmen and young experts. MGIMO alumni contribute to successful development of their Alma Mater. The number of graduates taking effective part in the University’s life increases from year to year. Since 2008, the Association has been led by A. A. Bessmertnykh, former Soviet Minister of Foreign Affairs. In recent years, the Association was not only concentrated on its core activities such as arrangement of reunions (meetings on graduation anniversary dates), general University’s festivals, business appointments, farewell parties, and preparation of annual graduates catalogue, but extended its activities to include cultural events (such as graduates’ Arts Exhibition). The Association holds more than 30 corporate, business and cultural events every year. All these efforts of the Association prevent MGIMO alumni from losing touch with the University. Association’s staff traces all important and memorable events in their lives, sends greetings on their birthdays and new appointments, arrange meetings as part of the project “History of Success”. Club “Pervenets” (Firsts) presided by R. A. Sergeyev, Ambassador, consolidates alumni of the MGIMO’s initial admittance. Clubs of foreign graduates which the Association maintains permanent contacts with should MGIMO University  be mentioned specifically. They undertake active work, initiate conferences and charitable events. The Association has representation in Azerbaijan, Armenia, UK, Germany, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Mongolia, Poland, North America, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Switzerland. The Association sponsors International Career Days in March and November, training and master classes, presentations, case-studies from leading national and foreign companies, and thus facilitates employment of University’s graduates. Future graduates represent another strong focus of the Association’s efforts. It actively engages students in various initiatives and general University’s events such as Miss MGIMO, Freshmen’s Day, and numerous sport events and competitions.

MGIMO Endowment Fund

MGIMO was the first Russian university to establish its endowment. In 2007, it created the MGIMO Development Fund with E.Biryukov as its Executive Director for accumulation of long-term special-purpose capital and utilization of earnings it generates for development of educational programmes, funding of research projects, enhancement of the University’s infrastructure, and other purposes of MGIMO development. Funds kept as an endowment must remain untouched, and the University may use only the earned interests. Briefly, the endowment works so that its capital is constitutedby donations for the MGIMO’s development purposes and is placed under management of the investment company that undertakes to ensure its consistent growth. So, the University’s programmes are funded from investment of the endowment revenues, while the endowment

itself remains untouched. Initial contributions to the endowment were made by widely known businessmen, MGIMO graduates V.Potanin, A.Usmanov, and F.Shodiev. Considerable donations were also received from A.Kozitsyn, General Director of UGMK-Holding, A.Dzhaparidze, Chairman of BKE Drilling Company, V.Medinsky, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, K.Kosachev, Head of Federal Agency for CIS Relations (Rossotrudnichestvo), and many other.

In 2012, the MGIMO’s endowment exceeded RUR 1 billion. Since March 2009, the University’s endowment has been managed on trust by Gazprombank — Asset Management, the company which some of University’s graduates are employed with. In late 2011, for risk diversification purposes, MGIMO decided to constitute the second endowment which then was entrusted (since 2013) to the Alfa-Capital managing company.

Another focus area of MGIMO’s Development Fund is project fundraising. The priority lists of development projects requiring additional funding are lodged before annual meetings of MGIMO Board of Trustees by Fund employees. Also, the MGIMO Development Fund handles special-purpose donations

for implementation of certain initiatives proposed by MGIMO leaders and staff (including organization of research conferences, publication of textbooks etc.). Recently, the MGIMO Development Fund started arranging the contests of student projects. Due to this support, a number of the most relevant proposals have been successfully brought to life already.
