MGIMO Welcomes John Mearsheimer

October 17th, John Mearsheimer, an outstanding theoretician in the field of International Relations and Global Security from the University of Chicago came to MGIMO to give a series of lectures. During his first day, the Professor met with MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov and gave a talk to students on the theory of «offensive realism» and the prospects for US-China relations.

John Mearsheimer is one of leading US experts on the theory and history of International Relations. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1970 and he received his doctorate at Cornell University in 1980. The Professor has worked, over the years, as a research fellow at the Brookings Institution, as post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University and at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Since 1982, he has been a member of the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago. John Mearsheimer headed for many years this Department, like his predecessor the founder of «International Relations» as an academic and scientific discipline, Hans Morgenthau.

Paraguay Foreign Minister at MGIMO

October 17th, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov welcomed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay Eladio Loizaga at the University.

Anatoly Torkunov related to the guest of honor the history of MGIMO university and its international outlook. The University boasts numerous dual master degrees and student exchange programs with major foreign universities. The parties mulled over the opportunities of expanding cooperation in education between Russia and Paraguay.

Yong Kwek Ping Delivers Lecture at MGIMO

October 14th, Yong Kwek Ping, the CEO of Inventis Investment Holdings (Singapore), the largest foreign private equity fund in China came to MGIMO. During his visit, he gave a talk to students and had an interview with MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov and the Executive Director of MGIMO’s Endowment Fund Marina Petrova.

Yong Kwek Ping has been for over 16 years one of the most successful investors in China and he currently runs four funds with total assets under management of $ 6.2 billion.

Anatoly Torkunov and Valery Salygin Meet with Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University

October 5th, as part of their visit to the UK, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov and the Director of the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy (MIEP) Valery Salygin met with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford and a MGIMO honorary doctor, Louise Richardson. The meeting was attended by the Russian Ambassador to the UK Alexander Yakovenko.

The parties talked over possible pathways for collaboration between MGIMO, MIEP and the University of Oxford. Anatoly Torkunov reviewed the prospects for cooperation in research and education and took note of the past success of the existing partnership between MGIMO and Oxford University within the framework of the consortium of British, American, German and Russian Universities. The Rector suggested the following areas of collaboration: joint summer school, research and exchange programs for students and faculty members, dual master's degree programs in "International Relations", "Area Studies ", and "Political Science".

MGIMO Reinforces Cooperation with UN Office on Drugs and Crime

October 6th, MGIMO's Vice-Rector for Research Evgeny Kozhokin received an Advisor of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Ronan O'Laoire and an expert of the Anti-Corruption Academic Initiative Alexander Zinevich. The meeting was also attended by the Director of MGIMO's European Studies Institute Tatiana Shashihina and the leading expert Mikhail Marchan.

The sides discussed issues related to their cooperation in the framework of the Anti-Corruption Academic Initiative UNODC. This initiative has for goal to promote research and awareness in fighting against corruption, to study the role and impact of anti-corruption policies, to combat corruption in sport by encouraging public-private partnerships.
