John Mearsheimer's Series of Lectures at MGIMO

October 17th-21st, Professor John Mearsheimer, one of the most prominent theorists of International Relations, gave a series of lectures at MGIMO University. The topics of his three talks reflect the variety of his academic interests: the first being dedicated to "offensive realism" and US-China relations, the second to US strategy in the Middle East and the third to relations between the West and Russia.

During his first lecture to students, John Mearsheimer presented the theoretical tenets of offensive realism and analyzed the potential for competition between the US and China. The Professor is indeed famous in the US for his statement that "China cannot rise peacefully." During his speech, he noted that Washington and Beijing, despite their lack of aggressive intentions, would end up competing due to some of the basic underpinnings of offensive realism: uncertainty of intentions of the other party and increase in military capability on both sides.

Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus Visits MGIMO

October 21st, the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, Costas Cadiz, came to MGIMO. The Minister headed a delegation of senior representatives from seven Cypriot universities.

The guests were received by MGIMO's Vice-Rector for General Affairs, Artem Malgin, who showed them around the University, related the history of MGIMO and spoke of its renowned alumni and Honorary Doctors. The delegation also visited the Scientific Library named after I.G.Tyulin and the Museums of rare books and of MGIMO history.

Anatoly Torkunov Greets Australian Ambassador

October 20th, the Ambassador of Australia to Russia, Peter Tesch, was received at MGIMO by the University’s Rector Anatoly Torkunov and the Head of the International Office, Egor Andreev. The parties mused over the possibilities for cooperation between the two countries in the field of research.

During their interview, Anatoly Torkunov spoke about MGIMO’s international outlook; describing to the guest the joint programs MGIMO has with top-notch international universities. MGIMO offers short-term courses for foreign students and a vast array of programs taught both in English and in Russian. The University plans to further expand its cooperation in education with foreign institutions.

Seminar at MGIMO with Former Russian Finance Minister

October 19th, MGIMO received the Director of the Center for Strategic Research, Russia’s Minister of Finance from 2000 to 2011, Aleksei Kudrin. The guest of honor gave a talk to an audience of students and faculty members and participated in a discussion on Russia’s strategy of economic development and the conceptualization of its foreign policy.

The seminar with Aleksei Kudrin was attended by MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, the Vice-Rector for General Affairs Artem Malgin, the Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov, the Vice-Rector for Human Resources Vladimir Morozov and members of the Faculty.

7th Conference of MGIMO and Japan Institute of International Affairs

October 18th, the 7th Conference of MGIMO and the Japan Institute of International Affairs took place in Tokyo. A delegation from MGIMO participated in the event, led by the University's Vice-Rector for Research, Evgeny Kozhokin.

Kicking-off the event, the Director General of the Japan Institute of International Affairs, Yoshiji Nogami and Evgeny Kozhokin remarked that the conference was unfolding at a time when Russian-Japanese relations are flourishing, and that the speakers at the Forum would have the opportunity to describe their new nature, against the backdrop of international tensions.
